Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Finding Hope When the Mirror Breaks: Christian Counseling for Narcissistic Patterns

"A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." - Proverbs 17:22

We all long to be seen. To be loved. To matter.

But somewhere along the way, that desire can twist into something heavier—something harder to carry. Maybe you've been told you have a "big ego," or maybe you feel like no one truly understands you unless they see how much you’ve accomplished. Maybe deep down, there’s a part of you that’s still aching to prove your worth. And maybe… it’s wearing you out.

At Still Waters Counseling, we walk with individuals who struggle with traits often associated with narcissistic patterns—those who carry an inflated self-image on the outside but wrestle with insecurity, shame, or a fear of failure on the inside. Through Christ-centered counseling and clinical expertise, we offer a compassionate space to explore what’s really going on underneath the surface.

Because we believe what Psalm 34:18 declares: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

What Is Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)?

Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a clinical term that describes a pattern of behaviors such as:

  • Inflated sense of importance

  • Intense need for admiration

  • Struggles with empathy

  • Difficulty with criticism

  • Turbulent relationships

  • Secret feelings of shame or unworthiness

On the outside, it might look like arrogance. On the inside, it’s often a deep fear of being “not enough.”

Many people who wrestle with these patterns are exhausted by trying to maintain a perfect image or are frustrated by constant relationship breakdowns. They may experience:

  • Mood swings or depression when their efforts aren’t affirmed

  • Outbursts of anger or contempt when criticized

  • Anxiety when others don’t meet their expectations

  • Loneliness that feels like a wall they can’t climb over

But friend, God doesn’t turn away from complicated hearts. He draws near.

Where Psychology Meets Biblical Wisdom

Therapy isn’t about tearing down—it’s about unmasking the hurt and confusion that may have gone unspoken for years. At Still Waters, we use evidence-based talk therapy (also called psychotherapy) paired with biblical truths to help you:

  • Identify harmful relational patterns

  • Challenge distorted beliefs about self-worth

  • Learn healthy ways to manage emotions

  • Develop empathy and deeper connections

  • Replace shame with grace and self-importance with godly identity

God’s Word reminds us that true strength isn’t found in perfection, performance, or praise—but in surrender. “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

When Is It Time to Reach Out?

If you’ve been told you have narcissistic tendencies—or maybe you’ve just noticed a pattern of broken relationships, intense emotional reactions, or a need to always be “the best”—it may be time to explore those things with someone safe.

You don’t have to walk this road alone. Whether you’re coming for your own healing, or because someone you love has traits that hurt, this can be a place of transformation.

Even Jesus, who was perfect in every way, did not demand admiration. He humbled Himself to serve and love—and through Him, we’re invited to let go of pride and fear, and be remade in love.
