Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

When the Mind Won’t Let Go: A Faith-Filled Approach to OCD

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)

If you’ve ever found yourself trapped in a relentless cycle of intrusive thoughts and rituals that feel impossible to escape, you are not alone—and you are not without hope.

At Still Waters Counseling, we understand that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) isn’t just about quirky habits or a desire for things to be neat. It’s a heavy, uninvited burden that presses in on your daily life, often leaving you feeling ashamed, exhausted, and out of control. But here’s what we believe: no struggle is too complex for the healing touch of God’s Truth, and no heart is too tangled for His love to untangle.

Let’s walk together toward peace.

What Is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is more than just worry—it’s an exhausting loop of intrusive thoughts (obsessions) that spark an urgent need to act (compulsions), all in an effort to quiet the inner noise. But instead of bringing calm, the cycle often fuels more anxiety, more rituals, and more distress.

It’s the fear that if you don’t check the lock five times, something terrible will happen. It’s the overwhelming urge to scrub your hands raw just to feel “safe.” It’s the crushing guilt over a thought you never meant to think.

And in the midst of it all, there’s often a deep longing: Lord, why does my mind feel like this? Can You help me find peace again?

The answer? Yes, He can.

Common Symptoms of OCD

Obsessions are the thoughts or images that pop up, unwanted and unrelenting:

  • Fear of germs or contamination

  • Persistent doubts or fear of making a mistake

  • Intrusive thoughts that feel violent, inappropriate, or shameful

  • An overwhelming need for things to be “just right”

  • Religious or moral fears that make you question your salvation or worthiness

Compulsions are the actions you take to relieve the distress caused by those thoughts:

  • Repeated handwashing, cleaning, or checking

  • Reorganizing or counting items in specific ways

  • Rituals, like having to turn in a circle before going through a door way

  • Seeking constant reassurance from others

  • Avoiding people, places, or responsibilities due to fear of triggering your thoughts

Sometimes the thoughts are louder. Sometimes the behaviors are harder to hide. And sometimes, it all just feels like too much. But please hear this: There is hope.

A Faith-Based Path to Healing

At Still Waters Counseling, we integrate biblical wisdom with clinically proven therapy methods to offer whole-person healing—mind, body, and soul. OCD is a medical condition, not a lack of faith or a spiritual failure. And yet, we know how often the enemy uses it to whisper shame and fear into your spirit.

That’s why our counseling isn’t just about symptom management—it’s about restoration. With God’s Word as our anchor and therapy as our tool, we help you:

  • Challenge distorted thinking with both biblical Truth and cognitive strategies

  • Break free from compulsions that steal your peace

  • Restore your sense of identity as God’s beloved, not your struggle’s prisoner

  • Reclaim hope and joy as you walk in freedom

Psalm 94:19 reminds us, “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” That’s not just a nice verse—it’s a promise. And we’re here to help you live it out.

When Should I Reach Out?

OCD doesn’t have to take over your days. If your thoughts or rituals are interfering with your daily life, relationships, work, or faith journey, it may be time to talk to someone. We want you to know: reaching out is not weakness—it’s wisdom.

You don’t have to carry this alone. Healing is possible, and you are worthy of it.

Why Still Waters?
